<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I've owned one of Incase's older camera bags, the DSLR sling, for about a year now, and I've found it incredibly useful. It's well made, it makes your gear easily accessible, and looks pretty good while doing it. But it wasn't something I could carry my schoolwork in (unless you count an 8.5x11 folded in half). So when they released the DSLR Pro Pack, pictured here, I was thrilled to take a look.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5WGpHdcc9xXvBOFMDZlJnHUDccRCrydAT2UkX8eUnvT-v0g7Mu7BtYTPx-JFfSSscjeSqC42RPxic5GsYYXDvb8DDkrtqQrXCqiscV3ZIEntbwFLbdyT_1hf8DMUc4DCTz8Q3oa6SoFU/s1600/IMGP4634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5WGpHdcc9xXvBOFMDZlJnHUDccRCrydAT2UkX8eUnvT-v0g7Mu7BtYTPx-JFfSSscjeSqC42RPxic5GsYYXDvb8DDkrtqQrXCqiscV3ZIEntbwFLbdyT_1hf8DMUc4DCTz8Q3oa6SoFU/s400/IMGP4634.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Well, here it is, in front of the university's scanning electron microscope. It's not exactly a small backpack, but not really huge either. I'm 5'4" and 120 lbs, and it fits me reasonably well. The form factor is on the longish side, and resembles a well-rounded rectangle. The front has this strange kind of "butt" protrusion, as you can see above. It doesn't stick out a whole lot, but it's there.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It's made from a "heathered" canvas material that can be found on some of Incase's other products. I have no idea how well it will wear, but I'm guessing that it will age gracefully, like most canvas. It's also reasonably water resistant. A light drizzle just beaded off when I walked to class in the rain the other day. The right parts are padded in a light mesh, but I found that the straps only have 5-6mm of "give." Fully loaded, it'll probably put some strain on your shoulders.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">It has a sternum strap to distribute the weight more evenly between your shoulders and chest. A nice touch.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The camera compartment is lined with gray fleece. Everything's pretty well padded. There are also three pouches on the compartment "door", two zippered and one velcro'ed. These seem like good places to put filters, ND grads, and film.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">This compartment is about 5 inches tall, so you won't be fitting a DSLR with a grip in there (not sitting upright with a lens attached, anyway).</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">In the front there's also a pocket for a point and shoot or a small flash (the 285HV will NOT fit). Richard, my Olympus 35 RC, fits with room to spare :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw6GJnHzjQe-tS0w1_iBJ73xilOL3ggTAIM9hzaVLDM0tb0KeDCRb3_JjZ-609i67TEA-6eDAunzuKOHHaw7UOFWIntwzSRp7fu2vkm5ZMMmiUhtfnb4DZhUmv_pybKW2Y3Pq1LHP_wmi8/s1600/IMGP4644.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw6GJnHzjQe-tS0w1_iBJ73xilOL3ggTAIM9hzaVLDM0tb0KeDCRb3_JjZ-609i67TEA-6eDAunzuKOHHaw7UOFWIntwzSRp7fu2vkm5ZMMmiUhtfnb4DZhUmv_pybKW2Y3Pq1LHP_wmi8/s400/IMGP4644.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Conveniently, it also fits a TI-84 (or 89, whatever floats your boat) perfectly! It's almost too good to be true for an engineering student.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCl0gcEI5ojMYXDI2r44TsLqzuVxPthlYN753qeklaUoUFkharzw1f84W6IM_NyERxIi605-_h4GLz8NB-qi4Opxt4rUF_ZbLqgZx0DYgBKp-yuoey3ziGnpXIY7E0ZCSyhiKMR4RnkHG9/s1600/IMGP4652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCl0gcEI5ojMYXDI2r44TsLqzuVxPthlYN753qeklaUoUFkharzw1f84W6IM_NyERxIi605-_h4GLz8NB-qi4Opxt4rUF_ZbLqgZx0DYgBKp-yuoey3ziGnpXIY7E0ZCSyhiKMR4RnkHG9/s640/IMGP4652.jpg" width="424" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The top zipper gives you access to whatever you've packed in the top of the bag, so probably your main body and a couple of lenses. That's a Minolta SRT-201, for reference. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1YouwPNUbfAHoimshWhzTMn6GiT3JT5RcOKNcjLcI3UbB2d-Kzi1s4dUeB9earsSB4Nw0aEOcKszDA8qX8CvGcriaotkqrGHOPJtcPkXqJZ3k27mnMpUMbM8mzbxVXswADsGjTuhya9hg/s1600/IMGP4653.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1YouwPNUbfAHoimshWhzTMn6GiT3JT5RcOKNcjLcI3UbB2d-Kzi1s4dUeB9earsSB4Nw0aEOcKszDA8qX8CvGcriaotkqrGHOPJtcPkXqJZ3k27mnMpUMbM8mzbxVXswADsGjTuhya9hg/s400/IMGP4653.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">There's a small pocket in the front that isn't zippered or anything. It won't expand much, but you can fit a pen and pad in here.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8g5rU_U_xCiaA2GaPIkev5tWMJ4aGtqoik8B4RlR0LvR1xUF1W76xePDAnrxcf8SLQI-Ason0b-qPtW9ClC5gxjSFNiNbs0y23C7xIzaD_CQHQBgGJmiIw_JBVkS839fZRWB5pkEiEAbl/s1600/IMGP4654.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8g5rU_U_xCiaA2GaPIkev5tWMJ4aGtqoik8B4RlR0LvR1xUF1W76xePDAnrxcf8SLQI-Ason0b-qPtW9ClC5gxjSFNiNbs0y23C7xIzaD_CQHQBgGJmiIw_JBVkS839fZRWB5pkEiEAbl/s400/IMGP4654.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">One side of the bag also has a pocket and another small zippered compartment. You won't fit a water bottle in here - or any beverages, in fact (maybe a hip flask?) - but you can fit a harmonica.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">On the other side, there are two straps to hold a tripod. I don't have one on hand, so no photo - sorry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8A3cogpoGU2h2DaXpLrAjNHlKqHCAysNK05pHOdc492I5VuvnrW-_o4wrJmSA1_gKt8eXcxmXvXO8Cn1y3L0aBwr5XP0y7eU5yGVv50n5QY1GmqQ9GK-PKRNNb9yXkk0VYxt6fYUGSuwJ/s1600/IMGP4656.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8A3cogpoGU2h2DaXpLrAjNHlKqHCAysNK05pHOdc492I5VuvnrW-_o4wrJmSA1_gKt8eXcxmXvXO8Cn1y3L0aBwr5XP0y7eU5yGVv50n5QY1GmqQ9GK-PKRNNb9yXkk0VYxt6fYUGSuwJ/s400/IMGP4656.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Incase say that you can also fit a 15" Macbook Pro, and iPad, and iPhone in the front pocket. But for those of us who aren't Apple aficionados, it'll nicely fit a Dell XPS15 (L502x) + charger, and a 5-subject notebook. But not much else. It's pretty much full up as pictured here.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><b>Conclusions:</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">+ Well made, nice materials, and good form factor</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">+ Holds a ton of stuff, dividers fully customizable</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">+ Will hold most 15" laptops</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">+ Isn't a rectangular brick that screams "I'M CARRYING A CAMERA, PLEASE ROB ME!" It's pretty attractive, in fact.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">+ Top zipper and point-and-shoot pocket provides additional accessibility (and it will hold at TI-84!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">- Padded support on the straps could be thicker</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">- It's difficult to access your gear while on the run. But such is the nature of the beast</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">- There were a bunch of loose threads that I wouldn't expect from this kind of product</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">- Limited space in the front pocket, most pockets aren't very stretchy - but that's what you pay for taking form over function</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><b>Who's it for?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">People who want to take their cameras with them everywhere, but do things other than photography and don't want to look like a photographer. Being able to take your laptop, tablet, and notes along in a separate compartment makes it a boon for college students, provided that you don't have to carry more than one textbook. You probably won't want to take it on a long hiking trip; I don't see anywhere where you could fit a water bottle (maybe in the tripod straps?) and besides, the straps aren't the most comfortable things ever. There's no waterproof sheath provided, either. </span>Kevin Kadookahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243556733439362221noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2279554625924411312.post-29823605939890872252011-12-20T03:28:00.000-08:002012-01-26T14:28:37.778-08:00Cameralogical Baggage - Incase DSLR Sling Pack (Long term)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Camera bags are one of those things that are hard to get <i>just right</i>. If they're compact and sleek, they won't hold all of your stuff, and when they do, often times they're too big to carry around with you everywhere. Backpacks are comfortable, but they tend to be big and you have to take them off to access your gear. Shoulder bags are convenient, but are a pain in the neck. And the list goes on and on. But I've found what seems like a good compromise, in the form of the Incase DSLR Sling Pack.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Incase is a medium-sized sling-type bag, and it can be yours in any color so long as it's black. It can be had from Amazon for under $70 (and if you do decide to buy it, please do it using the link at the bottom of this review!). I think it's quite a looker compared to the chunky sling bags from Lowepro, ThinkTank, et.al. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's constructed from high-denier nylon, and tough-feeling padding, which has proven to be both durable and water-resistant on more than one occasion. Toting the Incase between classes and assignments, tossing it in the car trunk, and laying it down on rough lava fields has shown it to be well-suited to the daily rigors of life. I've used it at least two or three times a week for seven months now, and it's still looking pretty darned fine.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was a big fan of shoulder bags and satchels, for their sheer convenience, but they were literally a pain in the neck. The Incase, despite still only having one strap, manages to distribute the load more evenly and thus is more comfortable on longer treks. However, you can't shoot quite as spontaneously as with a shoulder bag, since you must "sling" the bag, unzip it, grab your stuff, zip it closed, and "sling" it back again. Also, the slinging action will give you a bad case of bacon collar if you're not careful. But that's just in the nature of the sling bag, and it's still more convenient to me than a backpack.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The bottom line for me is that this is quite a nice camera bag. It won't hold your iPad, laptop, or your textbooks, but it does a stupendous job of carrying camera stuff around. It's comfortable and easy to shoot from, and doesn't take its design cues from a cardboard box (ahem, Lowepro). It gains my wholehearted recommendation, for whatever that's worth.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pros:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As any photographer knows, how you tote around your camera gear is no small matter. Having a do-anything go-anywhere bag is the ideal solution, and a recent offering from Crumpler may be the key. The Crumpler Haven is a padded insert that drops into any appropriately sized bag, and comes in three sizes. The one I got as a Christmas present for [redacted] is the medium size, which costs $50 direct from Crumpler with free shipping. Let's take a look, shall we?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a name='more'></a><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Haven resembles a beefed-up drawstring bag, constructed from what appears to be rip-stop nylon on the outside, with soft felt-like material on the inside. The padding ranges from very tough-feeling on the smaller sides to quite plush-y and soft elsewhere. The interior can be segmented using the two included velcro dividers. Elastic webbing on one side of the bag gives you space for assorted goodies. Crumpler says that the exterior is water-resistant, although the opening in the top makes that a bit of a moot point. All-in-all, the Haven looks like one tough cookie.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the limited-edition "blue dot print," which appears to be muted and pastel on Crumpler's website - it is not! The colors are more vibrant and fluorescent than I had expected. Oh well - you won't lose it in a crowd.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's about the right size for Mai's minimalist setup - her K20D and a 50mm f/2 M plus a charger. ([redacted] says it's the only lens she'll ever need - we'll see about that.) I managed to stuff in a K5 with a Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 attached, plus a converted Nikkor 135mm f/2 AI, and I bet you could fit more if you're ambitious about it. So, it'll fit a mid-sized DSLR plus two lenses, or one lens and a flash (my Vivitar 285HV fit nicely). </span></div>
